How to apply for a job

Kelly's testimonialApplying for a government job is different to applying for jobs anywhere else.

This is because government job have strict selection criteria and selection processes to ensure we get the best people for the job.

Firstly, and most importantly, read the job ad carefully. All NSW Government job advertisements list 'selection criteria', or skills, knowledge and experience you need to do the job.

Read the advertisement, make a note of anything you don't understand so you can ask questions and keep a copy of the advertisement so you don’t forget.

The next thing you need to do is contact the inquiries officer named in the advertisement so they can send you an information package about the job.

The package will include a detailed description of the duties of the job, plus any other documents which might help you with your application.

Be sure to read the information in the package carefully and don’t hesitate to call the officer again if you have any questions.

It’s also a good idea to get as much extra information as you can. If possible, search the internet, read annual reports or other publications or talk to people who work in Lands.

Your application

You need to apply in writing to any job at Lands. Your application shows why you are the best person for the job and how your skills, knowledge and experience match the selection criteria. It should contain:

  • A brief covering letter. This is optional, but always a good idea as you can summarise you key points. Keep it a page or less in length.
  • Your ‘claim’ for the position. This is a list of points addressing the selection criteria. To do this, make a separate heading for each selection criterion. Then, under each heading, describe your skills, knowledge and experience and show how they could be used in the job.

  • A resume. This needs to be clear, concise, up to date and include personal details, education and training, employment history including period of employment, job title, major duties and responsibilities, main achievements, skills/experience gained outside of paid work, contact details for two referees, including complete contact details.

  • A completed job application form, which you will find in your job package or online.

Remember, applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
