Frequently asked questions
Who are we?
Our official title is the NSW Department of Lands. But you can call us Lands. Divided into three main divisions -- Land and Property Information, Crown Lands and Soil Conservation Service - we’re part of the NSW State Government.
How many people do we employ?
We employ more than 1,500 people across the state. At Lands you can map the state with the latest spatial technology, conserve the environment, or help plan new housing and infrastructure projects. But that’s only a fraction of what we do; like most organisations we need managers, HR professionals, lawyers, accountants, graphic designers and a range of specialists in land management … the list goes on and on.
Are we an Australian or an international organisation?
As world leaders in land management we provide our expertise to many countries but our primary focus is within NSW and on a number of inter-state or national programs.
What’s our organisational culture like?
At Lands we work hard to make a difference for the people of NSW but we don’t lose sight of our staff’s quality of life. That’s why we provide job security, great pay, flexible hours and social clubs.
What industry do we fall into?
We’re part of the NSW State Government, also known as the public sector. Lands provides a wide range of land management functions from property title registration to maintaining crucial land databases. Our work is vital to government and private business.
What are our products and services?
Where should we start? Lands is the key provider of land and property-related information in NSW and, as manager of Crown lands, responsible for almost half of the state.
We define the state through our land records, registered property titles, official land valuations, maps, spatial information, survey control data, soil conservation works and land assessments. But talk to our staff because there’s a lot more.
What qualifications/attributes do we look for when recruiting?
Experience is not necessary, as many entry level and graduate positions are available and we provide access to training and education. All you need is an interest in land management, a good work ethic and the desire to help make NSW a better place.
Does Lands only recruit young people and / or graduates?
Not at all. We value knowledge and experience and have a number of programs for experienced workers, or workers who are semi-retired but want to earn extra income.
What kind of employment opportunities do we provide?
We have traineeships, apprenticeships and scholarships aimed at talented high school graduates or final year uni students that provide financial assistance and work experience, as well as opportunities to undertake further training. We also offer programs for experienced employees, part-time work for the semi-retired and mentoring programs. All this with job security and multiple paths to career progression.
How does our organisation identify new talent or advertise vacant positions?
You can find us in all the usual places like newspaper or internet ads, and of course expos. Check with your school or university about our apprenticeship and scholarship opportunities. You can also check our available jobs page or go to www.jobs.nsw.gov.au
